Rogelio Salmona pt.2

Although the materiality of his constructions is normally defined by the place where they are located, Rogelio Salmona used water widely as a connecting element through channels, water mirrors, swimming pools and ponds, without a doubt, a teaching of Arabic architecture from his travles across southern Spain and northern Africa.

More subtly, but nevertheless very present, another of the most important influences in the work of Salmona is the pre-Columbian architecture, particularly the Mexican squares of Teotihuacan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza, from which he recovers the use of alfarjes, valances and windows, as well as the sense of the space and the journey across the space.

In line with his idea of not privatizing open spaces, Salmona designed a succession of open spaces in the Virgilio Barco library that vestibulate and complement the interiors.

The first thing that came to my mind when I arrived at the Virgilio Barco Library was the Calzada de los Muertos in Teotihuacán, you realize through the compositional axis and the scale of the open space how he achieved an effect of monumentality without having to show yet the building, it is perhaps close to Barragán’s idea of preparing the user for each space, playing with the scales and the masses whose intimacy and recollection give way to other events.

Here, that buried sober and elegant courtyard (to which no doors or windows open to, only two continuous openings enveloped by the sound of water and facing a third that gives way to a loud waterfall), creates a welcome passage and pauses the spirit before enter the building.

The richness of the architectural language, the play of plans on facades, the movement of volumes, the dominance in the use of brick as a cladding of facades and in the treatment of open spaces and the chromatic unit, give the library an iconic character within a large urban park.

The Architecture of Rogelio Salmona is one of the few architectures with a real Latin American identity, which together with the great mastery of its execution, becomes an architecture that generates urban poems.
